CG Self Portrait in Stockholm, Sweden 1909

CG Self Portrait in Stockholm, Sweden 1909 is my last group project at Visual Magic. In this project I was working as a senior for three juniors in the first grade, therefore I was the team lead for this project. The brief was to create a self portrait (or in this case a group portrait) of us, the members, standing in front of the Royal Swedish Castle in the year 1909. For this we relied heavily on the reference video, a film shot in the same place 1909.

My personal tasks, other than overseeing the project management and juniors, consisted mainly of creating the castle in the background and learning about MetaHuman crowd simulations. Crowds are a completely new area for me, so unfortunately as this was a mere 2,5 week project I only learned how to use and setup crowds using the City Sample Pack from Epic Games. There aren't a lot of documentation in this area so I had to mostly figure stuff out on my own.

Finally after receiving the finished comp from the group members I did some color grading on the shot in DaVinci Resolve before exporting the final output. Really proud of my team and what we were able to accomplish in 2,5 weeks, their assets looked great and the weakest point in the chain was probably my crowd simulation hahah.

Final result. Scene building in Unreal Engine 5, asset creation in Maya, Blender, ZBrush and Painter, compositing in Nuke and finishing in DaVinci Resolve.

Working with MetaHumans in Unreal Engine be like.

Timelapse of the scene creation from blockout to finished scene.

Epic Games has a free City Sample Crowds that I used as a base.
